Why Fitness Is the Number One Differentiator
Physical fitness assessment is the single most common reason otherwise qualified firefighter candidates fail recruitment. It is objective, non-negotiable, and eliminates candidates without any consideration of their other strengths. Unlike interview preparation or cognitive testing, fitness cannot be faked, rushed, or improvised on the day.
The good news: physical fitness is entirely within your control. With the right structured preparation, starting 4–6 months before your target assessment date, the vast majority of reasonably healthy adults can achieve the required standards. The challenge is that most candidates significantly underestimate how specific and demanding these assessments are — and they train too generically, too late, or not at all.
This guide covers the three primary fitness assessment formats used by Australian fire agencies — the PACK test, the CPAT, and the beep test — plus supporting elements like strength requirements and role-based assessments. Understanding the Tests — By Agency
The PACK Test (Work Capacity Test)
The PACK test (sometimes called the Work Capacity Test or WCT) is the most widely used wildland firefighter fitness assessment in Australia. It is used by DFES in Western Australia and is the standard assessment for many volunteer brigade fitness requirements nationally.
What it involves: Candidates carry a 20-kilogram weighted backpack over a 4.5-kilometre circuit on undulating terrain. The course simulates the load carried by wildland firefighters transporting tools and equipment in the field. Walking is permitted — running is not. The pack must be on your back and cannot be assisted by any frame or carrying device other than standard backpack straps.
Agency variations: Some agencies use a 4.83km (3-mile) course — the original US Forest Service standard. Confirm the exact course distance with your target agency.
Training approach: Train with a weighted pack (start at 12–15kg, progress to 20kg) on hilly terrain. Begin with 3km sessions and progressively build distance over 8–12 weeks. Your goal is to complete 4.5km in 40 minutes or less — giving yourself a 5-minute buffer above the cutoff time.
The CPAT — Candidate Physical Ability Test
The CPAT is an internationally recognised eight-event physical assessment designed to simulate actual firefighting tasks. It was developed by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is used by QFES in Queensland and several other agencies. It is widely considered the most demanding standardised firefighter fitness assessment in Australia.
The eight CPAT events, in sequence:
- Stair Climb: 3 minutes on a StepMill at 60 steps/min wearing a 12.5kg vest + a 11.3kg hose pack on one shoulder — alternating shoulders at halfway
- Hose Drag: Drag a 38mm hose 15m, then pull a charged section 7.5m around a drum
- Equipment Carry: Remove two 12.5kg saws from a height of 1.5m and carry them around a 23m circuit twice
- Ladder Raise & Extension: Raise a 24-foot ladder to the wall; climb and extend a three-section ladder
- Forcible Entry: Use a sledgehammer to drive a weighted device 1.5m in the horizontal plane
- Search: Navigate an obstacle-filled dark tunnel crawling on hands and knees
- Rescue Drag: Drag a 74kg mannequin a total of 30m in an L-shaped course
- Ceiling Breach & Pull: Use a pole to push up a 15kg trapdoor 3 times, then hook and pull a ceiling simulator 5 times — repeated 4 cycles
Training approach: The CPAT rewards cardiovascular endurance, functional strength, and familiarity with the test sequence. Train wearing a weighted vest, practice all eight movement patterns, and build a solid cardiovascular base. Specific CPAT preparation courses are offered in some states.
The Beep Test (20m Multi-Stage Fitness Test)
The beep test (officially the 20-metre multi-stage shuttle run test) is used by multiple Australian fire agencies as a component of their fitness assessment. It provides a validated measure of aerobic capacity (VO₂ max) in a standardised format. FRNSW requires a minimum of level 7.5; other agencies have varying standards.
Level translation: Level 7.5 equates to approximately 5 shuttles at level 7 — a reasonable aerobic base for most adults. However, aiming for level 9–10 provides a significant buffer and demonstrates a level of fitness appropriate for the physical demands of the role. Training should target the level above the required minimum.
Training approach: The beep test is improved through consistent aerobic training — running 3–4 sessions per week including interval work. Including one session of shuttle-specific training (actual 20m shuttles at increasing pace) each week accelerates adaptation to the test format.
12-Week Firefighter Fitness Program
This program is designed to build all the physical qualities needed for Australian firefighter recruitment over a 12-week period. It is structured for someone who is moderately active but not specifically trained. If you are sedentary, add 4 weeks of baseline conditioning first.
Training Equipment — What You Need
You don't need a gym membership to prepare for firefighter fitness assessments. The most effective training is outdoors, functional, and uses basic equipment that can be set up at home or at your local park.

- Protein: Aim for 1.6–2g per kilogram of bodyweight daily. Prioritise whole food sources: chicken, fish, eggs, legumes, Greek yoghurt.
- Carbohydrates: Don't restrict carbs during high-volume training phases. Complex carbohydrates (oats, sweet potato, whole grain rice) provide sustained energy for training sessions.
- Hydration: Aim for 35–45ml per kilogram of bodyweight daily, more in hot conditions or during heavy training sessions.
- Meal timing: Eat a balanced meal 2–3 hours before training. Include protein and carbohydrates within 30 minutes of finishing a training session to support recovery.
- Iron: Particularly important for endurance athletes. Ensure adequate dietary iron or supplement if levels are low (confirm with a blood test).
